Hurricane Igor Threatens Bermuda

September 16, 2010

Hurricane Igor continues to be a dangerous category four storm, the second most powerful category in the five category Saffir-Simpson scale, and is now predicted to possibly hit Bermuda.

Officials in Bermuda reportedly have issued a small-boat warning and are directing residents to make preparations.

As of this morning, the storm was about 900 miles from Bermuda and was traveling at 7 mph. It had sustained winds of 140mph.

Swells from the storm are expected to reach the U.S. coast today and to be dangerous. The swells, with life-threatening waves and rip currents, will last through Sunday at least.

Hurricane Julia, meanwhile, has weakened and is predicted to not make any landfall in North America or the Carribean.

Hurricane Karl, which came ashore in the Yucatan south of Cancun yesterday, has moved offshore but is expected to return to land in Mexico early tomorrow. Karl had sustained winds of 75 mph as of this morning.
