The Kentucky Court of Appeals has reduced the monetary award in a lawsuit over the death of a University of Kentucky football player.
The court halved the $60 million in punitive damages to $30 million, ruling the award in the death of Trent DiGiuro was excessive, reported the Lexington Herald-Leader.
The athlete’s family sued Shane Ragland, who admitted fatally shooting DiGiuro as the player celebrated his 21st birthday in 1994. In a criminal case, Ragland pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to prison time and home incarceration.
The lawsuit filed in 2008 ended with a total award of $63.3 million.
