The deadline for insurers wanting to submit bids to write the workers’ compensation coverage for state agencies in West Virginia has been extended until October.
West Virginia’s primary workers’ compensation insurer said it will cover the agencies until October 1. BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Co. had announced earlier this year that it would stop covering state agencies due to high losses, especially from volunteer fire departments. In response, lawmakers required the Charleston, West Virginia-based insurer to cover state agencies until July 1.
Now, however, the state and the insurer have agreed to move that deadline until October 1 to give other insurers to respond to a request for proposal to replace BrickStreet.
Additionally, the insurer said it is considering holding on to some of its business. Insurer officials said they may look at covering the deductible portion of policies.
