Storms in recent weeks in Kentucky have produced mounds of debris, and the state Division for Air Quality is recommending that people remember the material may contain asbestos.
The agency advises keeping all debris from damaged buildings thoroughly wetted until final disposal to prevent potential release of asbestos particles. The debris should never be burned and has to be properly disposed of in an approved landfill.
Asbestos is commonly found in many building materials including roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, pipe insulation and flame-retardant products such as asbestos cement. When the materials are disturbed, microscopic fibers become airborne and can be inhaled and cause health problems.
