A massive fire that started Thursday at a north Georgia lumber facility was expected to take days to burn itself out.
North Georgia Hardwoods in Cleveland caught fire before dawn Thursday. The blaze was contained by 7:30 a.m., Cleveland Fire Chief Ricky Pruitt told news outlets, but continued to burn through 3 million board feet of lumber and three buildings.
No injuries were reported.
“The piles of lumber are still burning, but everything is contained inside what’s left of the walls,” Pruitt told The Times of Gainesville. “It’ll burn for a couple of days because of all the lumber that was in there.”
Pruitt said an employee who lives in an apartment onsite called in the blaze. A driver who had delivered a load of lumber during the night was asleep in his truck when the blaze spread to his truck and trailer, which were damaged.
White County firefighters and inmate firefighters from the Lee Arrendale women’s prison near Alto assisted the Cleveland Fire Department.
Pruitt said investigators wouldn’t be able to seek the cause of the fire until the site cools down. The state fire marshal will assist.
