TN Funeral Director, North Carolina Man Charged in Insurance Fraud Investigations

A grand jury in Tennessee this week indicted a funeral home owner on insurance fraud, theft, elderly exploitation and abuse-of-a-corpse charges after a months-long probe by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Chadrick Mundy, 37, was booked into jail in Fentress County, in northeast Tennessee, charged with filing at least 12 fraudulent claims on burial insurance policies, as well as multiple other charges, TBI said in a bulletin.

The Bureau began investigating in May after receiving information about alleged fraud and theft at the Mundy Funeral Home in Jamestown.

Court records were not available, and authorities have not named the insurance carriers that were allegedly defrauded.

State Department of Commerce and Insurance records show that Mundy obtained a funeral director license in 2023, but the license was suspended Aug. 14 of this year. During a hearing on the suspension, state investigators revealed that a financial audit had found evidence of missing documentation and that Mundy had filed fraudulent life insurance death claims for people who were still alive, including his own wife, WVLT news reported.

Mundy’s embalmer and sales agent licenses have expired, the records show.

In neighboring North Carolina, state Department of Insurance investigators charged a Charlotte man with using stolen identity information to fraudulently obtain auto coverage on stolen vehicles.

Joshua Alexander Willis, 35, was charged with 14 felonies in several counties. He added people to Progressive insurance policies without their knowledge so that he could fraudulently purchase cars in their names, the DOI said in a bulletin.

Willis was booked into jail and a judge in Union County set bond at $220,000. The investigation is continuing, the DOI said.
