A San Jose man was arrested on charges of alleged insurance fraud and attempted auto theft in connection with the attempted theft and false insurance claim on a $9,000 Yamaha racing motorcycle, following a joint investigation by the California Department of Insurance undercover investigation unit, conducted with help from the Auto Interdiction Task Force.
David Simoes, 26, allegedly contacted a citizen offering to sell his motorcycle through the Internet. Simoes is alleged to have told the individual that he would be willing to “steal” the motorcycle therefore giving the citizen the opportunity to make a theft claim to his insurance company for the loss of the bike.
Through information offered by the citizen, an undercover operation was put in place by CDI Fraud Investigators as an investigator made contact with Simoes through the Internet agreeing to allow him to swipe the motorcycle with the idea of making a false claim for the theft of the motorcycle.
With cooperation from the Yamaha Motor Corporation, who supplied CDI Investigators with a racing motorcycle, a face-to-face meeting was setup with Simoes and the undercover investigator. Investigators from CDI and the Auto Interdiction Task Force proceeded to arrest Simoes while attempting to take the motorcycle.
