CDI Announces New Computer-based License Examination

September 19, 2002

The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is now administering its qualifying license examinations in a computer-based format.

Previously, individuals seeking licensure endured a written examination and waited much longer to learn of their exam results. The Sacramento examination site was the first to be automated on Aug. 23. The San Francisco examination site will be the next to be converted, followed by San Diego and Los Angeles. The conversions will be completed by Nov. 2002. At this time, the examinations conducted in Clovis twice a month will continue to be delivered in the pencil and paper format.

“The California Department of Insurance is continuously finding ways to improve our services to our constituents,” said Commissioner Harry W. Low. “Individuals seeking to become licensed in California are a key component of our large marketplace. Once licensed, they can help serve millions of insurance consumers in California. Our new computer-based examinations help speed along the process, while maintaining high standards.”

Among the advantages to the new system are:

• An examinee achieving a passing score can expect to receive their license in a timelier manner. The traditional manual process has taken up to 14 days to issue a license to the applicant after passing the examination. In contrast, with the computer-based examination, the applicant may be issued a license within two business days after passing the examination.
• The examinee has the ability to skip questions and easily return to them on demand.
• The computer-based examination provides feedback to examinees that do not pass. Examinees receive information identifying those subject areas for which they did not receive a passing score.
• The computer, eliminating the possibility of human error, grades the computer-based examinations.

All of the license examination types administered by CDI will be converted to the computer-based format, including life, fire and casualty, bail and insurance adjusters. The computer-based examination is one example of how CDI is expediting the services provided by the Producer Licensing Bureau to those interested in becoming insurance agents and brokers.

Applicants interested in the new computer-based format can visit the CDI Web site for more information.
