Members of Wyoming’s Albany County Fire District No. 1 board are working to create a set of bylaws that will allow county volunteer fire departments to qualify for government liability insurance, immunity and money.
ACFD board chairman Clint Summerfield said Saturday private incorporation of the Vedauwoo, Centennial, Big Laramie and Little Laramie fire departments has led to a conflict with multiple Wyoming state statutes that doesn’t allow them to tap government insurance and money.
The situation left volunteer firefighters without liability insurance. The volunteer fire departments obtained private insurance while they work to become eligible for the government coverage.
The board agreed to have an elected representative from each of the departments bring drafts of proposed bylaws to an ACFD meeting scheduled in three weeks.
Following the meeting, Summerfield felt optimistic. “I was encouraged today,” he said. “I think we’re all starting to move in the right direction.”
