University of Hawaii Flood Appropriation Bill Signed by Governor Lingle

Gov. Linda Lingle signed legislation making an emergency appropriation of $47 million for losses suffered by the University of Hawaii from the October flooding of Manoa Valley.

A little more than half of the money came from the state’s insurance revolving fund, while the rest came from the general fund.

Earlier this week, federal lawmakers excluded nearly $40 million for flood relief and prevention at the university and the valley from the final version of an emergency spending bill.

At the time, university officials said they were disappointed by the omission. But they added money was already available to cover the $81 million in flood damage at the school’s Manoa campus.
