At 10 a.m. this morning, millions of Southern Californians are expected to millions of people in homes, schools, businesses, government offices, and public places are expected to drop, cover, and hold on, in what is expected to be the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history.
In a big earthquake, there may be very little time for individuals to protect themselves before strong shaking knocks them down or drops something on them. Most earthquakes have a sharp jolt a few seconds before the strong shaking, so people need to drop, cover, and hold on immediately when they feel the jolt according to the ShakeOut organizers. By practicing, people will act quickly, rather than waiting to see if the earthquake will be large when one actually occurs.
