San Diego and San Jose lead the nation in the ranking of major metropolitan U.S. cities with the largest percentage of drivers with alcohol-related driving convictions.
Data provided by Insurance.com indicates California has long been the epicenter for drunk driving, as well as the movement to stop the offense since 1980.
The report indicates that there are several reasons a city gets pushed to the top of the list of high-ranking drunk driving cities. Reasons include a larger number of drinkers, proximity to colleges or nightlife, less public transportation and better enforcement of DUI laws. San Diego police are proactive in pursuing convictions, it said.
Other cities that topped the list, following San Diego and San Jose, include:
- Charlotte, N.C.
- Phoenix
- Columbus, Ohio
- Indianapolis
- Los Angeles
- San Francisco
- Austin, Texas
- Jacksonville, Fla.
- San Antonio, Texas
- Dallas
- Houston
- Ft. Worth, Texas
- Memphis, Tenn.
- Philadelphia
- New York
- Baltimore
- Chicago
- Detroit
For the study, Insurance.com analyzed the percentage of car insurance quote requests for which users reported alcohol-related driving violations. Only the top 20 U.S. cities, in terms of population, were ranked. Boston was excluded because of a lack of data.
