Wyoming City Weighs Ban On Cellphone Use While Driving

The Jackson Town Council is considering a ban on cellphone conversations while driving that could start in Wyoming town in mid-December.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide reported the council gave preliminary approval to the proposed ban this week. Two more votes are required for final passage.

Texting and taking photos with cellphones would also be banned.

Emergency responders would be exempt. So would hands-free devices and any call to 911 or other emergency services.

Violations would be misdemeanors, which carry a maximum fine of $750. Police Chief Todd Smith says traffic violations typically bring a fine of $200 or less.

A handful of other Wyoming communities ban cellphone use while driving.
