The Alaska House has passed a resolution honoring those who came to the aid of Alaskans following the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964.
HJR23, from Rep. Charisse Millett, would designate this coming March 27 as Good Friday Earthquake Remembrance Day.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the magnitude 9.2 earthquake that struck south-central Alaska. The quake was one the largest ever recorded.
Millett, in a release, says in responding to the disaster, thousands of Alaskans came together to put the needs of others above their own. She says the resolution honors “the courage, character and compassion of Alaskans who persevered and rebuilt” Alaska after the quake.
The resolution now goes to the Senate.
