The Virginia State Police said its special agents made 231 arrests for insurance fraud and other related crimes, such as arson and forgery, in 2011 — up eight percent over 2010.
The Virginia State Police investigates suspected fraud in property/casualty lines of insurance, as well as suspected workers’ comp fraud.
The 2011 statistics, published last month, show 1,259 property fraud-related notifications were received.
Of the 627 notifications received involving injury and casualty fraud, 146 were for fraudulent workers’ compensation claims.
Since 1999, the Virginia State Police made 2,185 arrests for insurance fraud and related offenses, according to their 2011 annual report.
