Maine’s Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s administration says Maine’s auto and homeowners insurance rates are the lowest in New England and among the lowest in the country.
The Maine Bureau of Insurance is pointing to recently released reports from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners that show Maine’s average premium is among the most affordable. The NAIC ranks Maine as third in national rankings of lowest average auto insurance premiums. Maine’s ranked 11th nationally in homeowners’ insurance premiums.
“Maine is consistently a national leader in affordable auto and homeowners insurance,” Gov. LePage said in a prepared statement on Jan. 31. Maine families continue to pay less for auto and homeowners insurance, on average, than those in any other New England state, the governor said.
“Even with coverage requirements that exceed those in most states, Maine has some of the lowest average auto premiums in the nation,” Maine Insurance Superintendent Eric Cioppa said. “This reflects the healthy competitiveness of the auto insurance market in Maine.”
Officials also said Maine continues to rank among the states with the lowest percentage of uninsured motorists.
