As the state braced for significant flooding from heavy rains in the Midwest, the Louisiana Department of Insurance reminded National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders in Louisiana of an approaching deadline regarding flooding that occurred in Spring 2015.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) authorized a 180-day extension for homeowners to file a Proof of Loss form. It applies to submitted claims that relate to rains beginning on May 16, 2015, through June 16, 2015.
The filing deadline to claim damages is normally within 60 days of a flood loss. An NFIP policyholder who suffered a loss on May 16, 2015, would normally have had until July 15, 2015, to submit a Proof of Loss form. With the extension, the policyholder must now submit the form by Jan. 16, 2016.
The form substantiates the insurance claim and is required before the NFIP will make payment.
As to the recent flooding dangers, Gov. Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opened part of a massive flood control structure on Dec. 30, 2015, as the state prepared to deal with high water on the Mississippi and Red rivers, as well as other waterways.
