Pennsylvania’s Altman Named to Leadership Position on Health Insurance with NAIC

Acting Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Jessica Altman will serve as vice chair of the Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the organization reported in announcing its leadership for 2018.

“I am pleased with this assignment, as it will allow me to further Governor Wolf’s and my priority of consumer protection and finding ways to make health insurance more affordable and accessible at the national level while working with my colleagues across the country,” Altman said in a press release issued by the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.

One of the main tasks of the Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee is to analyze policy implications and effects of proposed and enacted federal legislation and regulations on states.

“I am hopeful this leadership position with the NAIC will help me work with federal officials to implement policies that benefit consumers in Pennsylvania,” Altman added in the release, noting the NAIC works with Congress, the White House and federal agencies on health insurance issues.

The NAIC is the U.S. standard-setting and regulatory support organization created and governed by the chief insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. Through the NAIC, state insurance regulators establish standards and best practices, conduct peer review and coordinate their regulatory oversight.
