June 17, 2003

The Hartford Financial Services Group announced that it has named Lizabeth Zlatkus, executive vice president, to the post of chief financial officer of its subsidiary, Hartford Life Insurance Company, and Richard L. Mucci as senior vice president and director of the Group Benefits Division.

“Liz built the Group Benefits Division into a strong franchise with an exceptional management team. We are fortunate to have someone with Dick’s background and track record to assume Liz’s role,” stated Thomas Marra, Hartford Life president and COO. “In this expanded role, Liz will be responsible for overall financial management of Hartford Life and will work closely with me to define and lead long-term growth strategies for all of our businesses,” he continued. “It is critical that we build a stronger and more diversified business platform. Liz will lead the effort to ensure that our resources and strategies are aligned to support Hartford Life’s vision to be an industry leader in all our businesses.”

The bulletin noted that “Zlatkus will also head up the Office of the Chief Information Officer. Information technology plays an integral role in Hartford Life’s ongoing success, and Zlatkus will lead this group in designing and deploying IT strengths and best practices across the organization.”

“Mucci will have overall profit-and-loss responsibility for The Hartford’s group life and disability insurance, specialty products and medical stop loss,” said the announcement. “Since joining Hartford Life, Dick has displayed solid business acumen and leadership that will serve the division well,” Zlatkus observed. “As I move to my new position as CFO, I am confident that Dick and the Group Benefits Division’s management team will continue to lead the division to additional growth and profitability.”

He most recently served as Sr. VP and director of employer markets for the Group Benefits Division, “where he managed sales and distribution, marketing, product management, underwriting and pricing for The Hartford’s group life, disability, special risk and accident products sold to the employer markets,” said the announcement. Prior to joining Hartford Life, Mucci was a Sr. VP at MassMutual for five years and ran its individual disability insurance business.

“Zlatkus joined The Hartford in 1983 in the property-casualty operations, where she held increasingly responsible roles in finance, reinsurance and strategic issues. She joined Hartford Life in 1990, and following roles in finance, capital planning and investments, she became director of the group disability and life business in 1996. She was promoted to senior vice president in 1997, and in 1999 was named director of the Group Benefits Division, overseeing $2.5 billion in revenue and over 2,000 employees nationwide. She was promoted to executive vice president in 2000,” said the bulletin.

“I am excited about what Liz will bring to the company in her new role,” Marra continued. “Her ability to develop business strategies that drive results, coupled with her proven financial and risk management acumen, make her uniquely qualified to maximize Hartford Life’s strengths and grow our business profitably.”
