The former CEO of a prominent New York City charity who apologized for what he called “mistakes” when he was fired last month has been charged with stealing from the organization.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says William Rapfogel, who ran the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, has been arrested on felony charges that include grand larceny, money laundering, criminal tax fraud, and conspiracy.
Schneiderman says Tuesday that Rapfogel conspired to inflate the rate of insurance policies paid by the charity and pocketed the difference. Rapfogel and others are accused of stealing $5 million over 20 years.
The charity cited “financial irregularities” and “apparent misconduct” when it ousted him.
Rapfogel is married to Judy Rapfogel, chief of staff to state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. No official made any connection between the action by the charity and Silver’s office.
