For the first time, Dover, Delaware, police are using a team of officers to target drivers who text and talk on the road.
The department says that despite many campaigns to spread awareness that it’s illegal to use cellphones without a hands-free device, officers regularly see drivers talking or texting on Dover roadways.
Dover police say there were 146 crashes last year attributed to distracted driving in Delaware, including 54 injuries and three deaths.
Talking and texting while driving has been illegal in Delaware since 2011 and is punishable by a fine of more than $100.
