Electronic driver’s licenses and proof of insurance could be a step closer to reality in New Jersey under bills moving through the Legislature.
A state Senate committee approved two bills Monday that pave the way for electronic ID’s.
One measure calls for a Motor Vehicle Commission review of electronic driver’s licenses. The cost of the study would come out of the commission’s budget.
The bill aims to show the costs — and savings — of switching from a card to an electronic system.
The other measure authorizes drivers to provide auto insurance identification in either paper or electronic formats.
State Sen. Tom Kean Jr. says New Jersey should be at the “forefront of new technology,” adding that such a program could allow drivers to use their phones to show credentials.
