Connecticut Labor, Advocates to Honor Workers Who Died on the Job

Organized labor is marking Workers Memorial Day by calling on the Connecticut legislature to pass bills intended to improve employee safety.

One measure would require the state’s Department of Administrative Services to report complaints of bullying or abusive conduct among state employees. Another would help provide workers’ compensation to firefighters with certain types of cancer due to their work.

A third bill would require hospitals to report annually to the state their prospective nurse staffing plans.

On Tuesday, organized labor will honor workers who died on the job or suffered illness or injuries at work. A wreath will be placed at the Workers Memorial in Bushnell Park in Hartford, Connecticut.

Lori Pelletier, executive secretary treasurer of the Connecticut AFL-CIO, said too many workers are exposed to serious hazards despite improved workplace safety.
