Three men have been convicted in a trip-and-fall scheme that recruited low-income people and the homeless to defraud New York City-area businesses and their insurance companies.
Prosecutors say a federal jury in Manhattan Tuesday found Bryan Duncan, Robert Locust and Ryan Rainford guilty of conspiring to commit mail fraud and wire fraud.
Beginning in 2013, prosecutors say the trio used the recruits to stage various trip-and-fall accidents and then filed fraudulent lawsuits. The recruits claimed injuries and were steered to certain chiropractors and doctors.
The fraud scheme also offered the patients payments and a percentage of any settlements for undergoing medical procedures.
Prosecutors say former chiropractor Peter Kalkanis was the leader and organizer of the fraud scheme. He previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.
