An agreement between Indiana University (IU) and Enterprise Rent-A-Car will allow students under 21 to rent cars for personal use, but the deal comes with many restrictions.
To rent a car, students between 18 and 21 years old would have to have full-coverage, low-deductible car insurance and a major credit card in their name. They could only travel in state, could not rent SUVs or luxury cars and could have no more than one passenger.
Enterprise, based in St. Louis, is also assessing students a $30 per day surcharge. The service will be reviewed every three months and could be discontinued if Enterprise thinks the risks are too great, according to the contract.
W.T. Wright, the IU Bloomington student body president, said some students may use the service for weekend trips home or to drive to and from the Indianapolis airport.
“I think this is going to open up many opportunities for students next year,” Wright said.
The agreement is part of the university’s contract with Enterprise to run its Bloomington Motor Pool rental fleet. University workers will operate other motor pool services, including a service garage, motorist assistance and safety-escort services.
