Chicago Mayor Richard Daley wants a 3-day government shutdown this year to save the city money and help plug a $469 million budget hole.
The city estimates that shutting down non-safety related city services for three days this year and three more next year would save nearly $20 million.
Daley says he wants the city to close the day after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
All employees would be off and unpaid except for police, fire, 911 workers and others who normally work holidays to keep city services going.
The government shutdown is among the latest cuts announced by Daley in advance of his budget presentation to the City Council.
