Iowa House Approves Ban on Texting While Driving

February 25, 2010

The Iowa House has approved a measure which would ban drivers from writing and sending text messages while driving.

The House approved the measure Feb. 23 on an 64-31 vote, sending it to the Senate for more debate.

Democratic Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad, of Des Moines, said half of the drivers age 18 to 24 send text messages while they are drive, with some sending up to 3,000 text messages a month.

The measure also prohibits instant messaging and e-mailing while driving.

Gov. Chet Culver pushed the Legislature to take stronger steps even before the House vote.

The House rejected one attempt to make the ban effective only for drivers under age 18.
