Michigan City Reported 5 Vacant Building Fires in 4 Hours

September 20, 2011

Authorities in Michigan said firefighters in Flint responded to five fires at vacant buildings during 4-hour span over the weekend.

The fires on the city’s east side were reported Saturday night. Other area departments assisted in extinguishing the blazes.

Two fires were at commercial structures and three were at residential buildings. One person was injured in a fire that destroyed a home that may have been occupied by squatters.

Fires at vacant buildings in Flint have been a significant problem that has strained firefighters. On July 4-5, crews responded to eight suspected arsons at abandoned homes. A string of possible arsons in an eastside Flint neighborhood also was reported in June.

A string of fires July 1 led to charges against a number of people.
