Michigan authorities plan to crack down on speeding and distracted driving in eastern Kalamazoo County following a 193-vehicle pileup that killed one man and closed a stretch of Interstate 94 for two days.
State police Lt. Dale Hinz tells the Kalamazoo Gazette there have been problems with speeding and aggressive driving in that area for a while. He says that leads to crashes in bad weather.
Authorities say speed and driver behavior in whiteout snow conditions were to blame for the Jan. 9 crash.
The stretch of interstate has averaged about 240 crashes reported per year between 2004 and 2013. Troopers already have targeted tailgating, aggressive driving and speeding. This summer, distracted driving will be a focus.
The sheriff’s department also is working to put more deputies in the area.
