Louisiana Agent Shut Down on Multiple Fraud Allegations

May 1, 2003

Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Robert Wooley confirmed that the business of a Gonzales, La. insurance agent was halted in the latest investigation of alleged insurance fraud across the state.

Department of Insurance Fraud Unit investigators served Melissa Guillot Robert, 39, at Ascension Insurance Agency, 120 East Cornerview Street, Gonzales, with a cease and desist order and a summary suspension of her insurance licenses.

The order states that Robert misappropriated funds and/or issued bogus written statements of insurance coverage on at least four separate occasions in a two-year period. She is prohibited from engaging in any activity relating to the business of insurance.

Department records show that Robert first received a property & casualty insurance license in 1986, a Fraternal license in 1988, a life and health license in 1989 and an Auto Club license in 1995. The p&c and life & health licenses were current at the time of the suspensions.

“Most agents (producers) are honest, hardworking people, but a few of them are not, Wooley said. “We will continue to investigate and shut down dishonest insurance agents anywhere we find them.”

Policyholders who have current insurance policies purchased from Melissa Guillot Robert of Ascension Insurance Agency should call their insurance company to verify their coverage. If they have trouble reaching the insurance company, they can call the Louisiana Department of Insurance, at (225) 342-5900, or toll-free, (800) 259-5300, for assistance.
