Former Louisiana lawmaker James David Cain passed away on May 8, Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple announced.
Cain served 20 years in the Louisiana House of Representatives and another 16 years in the Louisiana Senate, where he led the Insurance and Agriculture & Natural Resources committees. In 2006, Cain made an unsuccessful run at insurance commissioner.
“As someone who had the pleasure of knowing Senator Cain since my childhood, there is no better example of consummate leadership and tireless advocacy for the people of Louisiana,” Temple said in a statement. “I want to express my deepest condolences to Senator Cain’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.”
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that “few Louisiana legislators have left such an indelible mark on our state’s political history.”
“His love for his constituents was remarkable and he would fight tirelessly for their needs. His warm sense of humor and his pragmatic approach to politics made him colorful and beloved,” Landry wrote.
Cain’s son, James David Cain Jr., serves as a district judge on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana.
