Federal experts say a small earthquake struck near the South Carolina coast last week.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake occurred about 6 miles south southeast of Summerville shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday. It had a magnitude of 2.8 and the epicenter was about a mile below the surface.
Summerville police received no reports of damage or injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey said there were reports of mild shaking 20 miles away.
Small earthquakes occur from time to time in the area near where an 1886 earthquake killed more than 100 people.
In December of 2008, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake tipped over Christmas trees, knocked down pictures and caused minor injuries.
