Florida released a report yesterday listing the market share and earnings of accident and health insurers, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. ranked first in premiums earned, with $3.9 billion in direct premiums earned in 2009.
Despite earning the most, Blue Cross was only the state’s second biggest insurer. It covered 1,106,191 people in 2009. The biggest insurer was UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company. It covered 1,152,059 people.
UnitedHealthcare was second in earnings, with $2.2 billion in direct premiums earned.
The others in the top five insurers were: Aetna Health Inc., with $1.9 billion; Avmed, Inc., with $726 million; and, United Healthcare of Florida, Inc., with $654 million.
The market share possessed by Blue Cross in 2009 was 27 percent.
