South Carolina High School Coach Files Whistleblower Suit Over Firing

April 24, 2018

A basketball coach is suing a South Carolina school district, saying he was fired because he blew the whistle on issues such as grade-changing and covering up sexual harassment.

The Morning News of Florence reports Andre Weathers is suing the Williamsburg County School District, a former superintendent and others. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from the district, which the state Education Department has taken over.

It says the district and employees allowed students to pass despite failing grades; altered attendance and discipline records; and allowed sexual harassment to go unpunished.

The newspaper reported it was unable to reach defendants for comment.

Weathers coached the Hemingway High School boys’ basketball team in 2015-16, leading it to the Class A state championship game. He now coaches at Marion High School.
