Kin Insurance and its reciprocal exchange program have expanded into Mississippi, just as tornado damage may be worsening in the state.
Mississippi saw 184 tornadoes in 2022, ranking it first in the nation for tornado activity and up sharply from the number of storms in 2021, according to BankRate.
“We can operate in catastrophe-prone states like Mississippi because we use huge troves of data and weather simulations to assess and price risk appropriately to the benefit of homeowners – keeping them properly and fairly insured,” Kin CEO Sean Harper said in a news release.
Kin, which relies on technology and calls itself a “pure-play, direct-to-consumer” digital insurance platform, has continued to expand its reach. The company moved into South Carolina in January, and recently filed for rate increases for homeowners and condominium policies in Florida.
