Errant tee shots and sore backs are obvious sources of potential injuries at golf courses. But studies have shown that the claims filed by golf facilities have little to do with the game. Below are eight common sources of claims, along with a few tips for managing risk.
- Fire – Don’t store combustible materials in electrical equipment rooms.
- Slip, trip and fall – Place mats on smooth floors during inclement weather, mop up spills immediately, and patrol paths to spot hazards for safe walking.
- Water/wind – Maintain property by trimming dead branches and keeping growth away from power lines. Protect pipes in freezing weather.
- Lightning damage – Safeguard against damage to equipment with electrical surge protectors.
- Golf cart usage – Have designated paths for carts and pedestrians. Require safe driving practices.
- Pool safety – Ensure the pool is equipped with certified anti-entrapment devices.
- Musculoskeletal disorders – Assess common tasks and make sure employees are using ergonomically sound postures and practices during their work.
- Theft/vandalism – Remove opportunity. Lock up vehicles and equipment at night and install automatic lighting outdoors to deter vandalism.
- Event Management – Review contracts. When considering special events at your facility, have all contracts reviewed to better manage general liability exposures.
