U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-Penn.) asked flood insurance companies to quickly process remaining claims from Irene and Lee. He says some 20 percent of the claims in Pennsylvania are still not processed. Federal flood insurance is a federally funded program administered by FEMA and is sold and serviced by property insurers. He sent an open letter to the Insurance Federation of Pennsylvania last month, seeking its help in speeding up the claims process. But critics say the government red tape and the additional requirements that the government has implemented in handling these claims are to blame. Early last month, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) also called on flood insurance companies to speed up their processing of insurance claims from tropical storms Irene and Lee.
