Vermont is spreading statewide a program to make it easier for people to have their driving privileges restored after their licenses were suspended for nonpayment of fines.
The three-month driver restoration program will begin Sept. 1.
People who have an unpaid fine for a traffic ticket for which judgment was entered before July 1, 2012, may apply for a reduced fine of $30 per ticket.
State officials say an inability to pay traffic fines for drivers who then lose their licenses disproportionally affects low-income Vermonters. The state estimates that about 40,000 Vermonters are eligible for the driver restoration program.
Suspensions for driving under the influence or for those involving commercial vehicle violations are not eligible.
