Investigators Say Burning Candles Sparked Deadly New Jersey Apartment Fire

January 29, 2018

Investigators say some burning candles apparently sparked a deadly fire at an apartment complex in Princeton, N.J., last month.

The Dec. 27 fire at the Griggs Farm community started in a bedroom in one of the units. The fast-moving fire roared through a three-story building, killing an elderly woman and leaving 35 residents displaced.

Investigators say no foul play or electrical issues were involved in the blaze.

Seventy-three-year-old Larisa Bartone was found dead in her apartment on an upper floor of the building. Authorities say she died as a result of the fire, but further details were not disclosed.

Princeton Community Housing, the company that owns and operates the low-income housing units, has been assisting the displaced residents.
