A federal lawsuit has been filed against Nebraska over the state’s denial of driver’s licenses for young immigrants who have gotten work permits and avoided deportation under an Obama administration policy.
Station KETV says the lawsuit was filed on May 31 for 24-year-old Mayra Saldana. The lawsuit names Director Rhonda Lahm of the Nebraska Motor Vehicles Department and the department.
Saldana was granted her deferred action last year, which means she can legally live and work in the United States without the worry of deportation. The lawsuit says she came from Mexico when she was 2 years old.
Last August Gov. Dave Heineman said Nebraska would deny driver’s licenses to the immigrants who became eligible to work in the U.S. as a result of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
